Tom Sawyer
Tom is an admirable boy who is very active and has a lot of energy, but sometimes can act unnecessarily mischief to get the attention that he wants. This wily childish boy is the main character of the book. He is an imaginative boy who still loves to play pirate with his gang. Thomas Sawyer is a typical 10-12 years old naughty boy who lives with his aunt, half-brother, and his cousin. Overall his character represent the readers about a well know proverb, which is “boys will be boys”. Despite his perversity Tom actually has a good heart and throughout the end of the novel he learned to take his responsibilities.
Aunt Polly
Aunt Polly is Tom’s legal guardian. She’s a kindhearted woman, but when she deals with discipline, she can be very serious and quite strict about it. Mark Twain put Aunt Polly as the caring noble character in this book. Even though sometime she struggles to balance her love for her nephew and her duty to discipline him.
Huckleberry Finn
Huck is a superstitious boy who’s a close friend of Tom Sawyer. He has been an outcast in the society because parents know him as a notoriety that brought bad influence to their kids. Despite his bad reputation among the adult, the kids admire him for his braveness to skip school and they’re jealous of his freedom.
Becky Thatcher
Becky is Tom’s lover who represents the “beauty” of this novel. She is engaged with Tom Sawyer by just rendering an agreement to say, “I love you” and kissing. In this novel, Becky shows some adult-like attitude but when t comes to jealousy she finally reveal her true color, which is a childish “daddy’s little girl”.
Judge Thatcher
Becky’s father who is a county judge and he is known as the local celebrity of St. Petersburg. He's playing a minor role in the novel.
Sid Sawyer
Tom’s whiny half-brother who is also lives together with Aunt Polly. Unlike his brother, Sid is on the good side of Aunt Polly. He is well behaving and always do his duty correctly. Sadly, he enjoys getting Tom into troubles. Sometimes he even lied to Ant Polly and blame Tom for his mistakes. He also likes to irritate Tom frequently.
Mary
Mary is Tom Sawyer’s cousin who is very mature and saintly. He helps Tom to memorize the bible. Tom sees her as an antidote from his “evil” brother Sid.
Jim
Jim is Aunt Polly’s young slave. He is a good friend of Tom Sawyer and he helps him a couple of time because Tom bribe him something in return.
Injun Joe
He is the half-breed antagonist villain of the novel. Injun Joe also commits the murder of Dr. Robinson, but he blamed Muff Potter on the murder. He becomes a robber and plans on taking a vindictive pleasure in punishing Mr. Douglas who has whipped him. In the end of the novel, Injun Joe was found dead in the cave.
Muff Potter
He is the town drunker who’s also a fisherman. He is a kind and friendly guy towards the kids. Muff Potter is a friend of Injun Joe who blamed him for Dr. Robinson’s murder. In his trial, Tom testified in front of the jury and saved Muff Potter from his charges.
Amy Lawrence
Amy is Tom’s former love. She used to be engaged to Tom, but Tom abandons her because of Becky. Amy is Becky’s biggest rival and Tom uses her to make Becky jealous.
Dr. Robinson
He is a local doctor who was murdered by Injun Joe when he was about to dug someone’s grave.
