In the original book, the story ended up happy with the murder mystery that finally solved, and Injun Joe who was found starved to death trapped in the cave. A week later Tom and Huck find a box of gold and Huck was adopted by Mr. Widow Douglas.
I think, for the ending the plot is too predictable and it is not very challenging for the readers. The tension bow that Mark Twain made for this book was dropping from the climax precipitously. The mood changing happens very quickly and for me as a reader it makes me want to read more.
The ending maybe could’ve been better if Twain gave more conflict in the story. Here is my version of alternate ending for The Adventure of Tom Sawyer:
After the cave door was unlocked, the village saw Injun Joe stretched upon the grown, starved to death, his body was dry as a tree. Everybody was in shock but at the same time they also felt some boundless relief.
At the time they thought the village is now will remain safe and sound without the criminal, two incapable leg is silently starting to move. Someone is waiting for the right moment to perform his intention while breathing heavily to gain some energy. It only took him three second to make an opportunity and startle everyone else in such a narrow time.
It turns out that Injun Joe is still alive! There is nothing more horrifying for Tom than the devil that comes back from the death. Injun Joe took his knife and giving his ominous expression. The situation went from a happy relief to chaos. Without any further due, Injun Joe use his long tiny legs to run. He was exhausted, but upon the God’s will he run like a cheetah!
Fortunately God is still on the good side and he doesn’t sleep. Slowly but surely Injun Joe’s step is getting weaker and weaker. He gave Tom a death stare and he thought about that little troublemaker who destroyed his life to safe Muff Potter’s life. Just before Injun Joe is about to faint, he throws his knife towards Tom. Becky saw that unexpected pitch, she ran into Tom and screams:
“NOOO! TOM WATCH OUT!”
The knife bloody knife ended up in poor Becky’s stomach. Blood coming out like a waterfall soaking through her dress. Tears are running from Tom’s eyes pouring into Becky’s red cheeks that turning as blue as her eyes.
“Becky! Why did you do this? Please don’t leave me Becky!”
“I love you Thomas Sawyer”
“NOOOOOOOO BECKY! COME BACK BECKY! I LOVE YOU!” Tom can’t hold his feelings anymore, he let it all out and crying like a wolf that cries to the blue corn moon.
Injun Joe is now arrested, and a couple weeks later they hung him over the demands of the murder of Dr. Robinson and Becky Tatcher.
Tom is very devastated over Becky’s death, but something is different about him. He moves on because he isn’t the same boy he used to be. He knows that Becky didn’t want him to drown into his sadness and despair. Tom is now a diligent and well behave boy. His love towards Becky has turned him into a real man who’s responsible for all of his duty. Becky will be forever remained in Tom’s heart.
