my EXPERIENCE that's RELEVANT to the book
There is no doubt that this book is quite realistic on how Mark Twain delivers his proverb “boys will be boys”, because I found the real life Thomas Sawyer in my everyday life. Not all, but almost 80% of my boy friends have at least once behave exactly like what Tom Sawyer did in the book.
In this book, Tom did a lot of what they called “cry for help”. That is maybe because sometimes he feel something is wrong with him. But instead of asking for someone’s help, sometimes they do something unnecessarily mischief. This thing happens a lot with some teenage boys. I found that boys are likely to be more prestige about their dignity because they think it is humiliating to admit that they might need someone’s help. They want to the outside world to see them as independent.
Doesn’t mean that girls didn’t do the “cry for help” either, but because of that prestige and its already has been a tradition all around the world that the boy is the one who’s going to lead the family later when they grow up. This tradition makes a perception in their minds and pressures their psychology to be better or stronger than the girls.
As a girl, I need to make some strategy in communicating with boys so they wont feel intimidated and still want to be friends with me. In my experience, I’m the one who has to be more modest in front of the boys and avoid self-effacing that might makes the boy down. I myself don’t mind with me lowering my dignity and standard because I believe being humble won’t make you a bad person. Instead, it reminds me to be more grateful for my skill and capability that God have given me.
My other personal experience that similar to Tom Sawyer’s story is about my friend from my previous school who has the same charisma as Tom. At the student council election he was the chosen school president. Even though I also vote for him, until now I am still confused on why is he always be the number one guy in any occasion. If there’s a problem, people will always came to him. He is the kind of person that all of the people in my school from students up to the teachers and even staff look up to.
Well sure this guy is smart, but the other candidates are also very smart. He plays sports and so does the others. I’m having a hard time to understand about what is so special about him and I am sure it is not just because he’s good-looking. I don’t think he is very nice either, because he used to bully me in the primary school. This guy is very tall and he always teased me who was very small and short at that current time. Pathetically all of my friends are on his team and they teased me together. Well what can I say? He’s the popular one and everyone listen to him.
While thinking about “why is this guy always be the number one guy?” I realized that there is should be one more question that I need to find the answer, which is “why did I vote for him in the first place”. I tried to turn back to the time I was holding the election paper, and I remember I voted him because I believe he can be a good leader by influencing people through his charisma. Just exactly like Tom Sawyer did. People listen to this guy because of the way he speak, very calm and “adult-like”. His constitutional and constructional is encouraging people to follow his lead.
After reading Tom Sawyer, I understand more about the people like Tom and my friend who are born with these natural charismatic qualities. I think in every school there will always be this one guy who has that natural charisma.
